I choose not to participate in social media, believing it dumbs us down to sources of likes and potential capital. The goal is to capture our attention by whatever means, and it works. We spend our time on devices because it’s less demanding than in-person connection, and we pay the cost with growing loneliness and animosity, a world at odds with itself. In the past, when I used it, I felt anxious and worse about myself and others. It made me anti-social, as I suspect it does for us all.*
